As if political money doesn't but these private prison corporations enough now they are boldly announcing their courtship openly. The following is from CCA's own website about their events in Arizona at the state capitol.
More than 60 CCA employees from the six Arizona facilities – Central Arizona Detention Center, Eloy Detention Center, Florence Correctional Center, La Palma Correctional Center, Red Rock Correctional Center and Saguaro Correctional Center – recently had an opportunity to rub elbows with some of the state Capitol’s most prestigious officials.
Through an event known as “CCA Day,” the facilities invited legislators and staff from the governor’s office to the Capitol lawn for lunch catered by Macayo’s, a local Mexican food restaurant. They also got a glimpse of the Capitol’s inner workings.
“We saw it was an opportunity for decision makers at the Capitol to meet employees from our six facilities in Arizona to get a sense of both the important public service our more than 2,700 employees perform everyday as well as a chance to share with the attendees the significant economic impact the operations of our facilities have on the Arizona economy,” says John Malloy, CCA senior director, State Partnerships.
CCA Day came on the heels of a recently released economic impact study which showed that CCA operations produce over $400 million in economic output to the state each year. The report was distributed to every member of the legislature and to the governor’s office.
“We saw CCA Day as a chance to put faces to the data that was in that report,” Malloy says.
During the day, CCA employees also toured the Capitol and heard speeches from Senator Rebecca Rios and Representatives Frank Pratt and Barbara McGuire. The officials thanked CCA staff for the meaningful work they do and commended the company for its commitment to community partnership.
CCA employees later proceeded to the gallery in both the House and the Senate and were acknowledged on the floor by local legislators.
“It was a positive experience,” says Todd Thomas, warden at Saguaro Correctional Facility. “I was pleased that our staff were able to participate and receive the recognition they deserve.”
At least 10 employees from each facility assembled for CCA Day, including all six wardens.
“It was nice to know that CCA contributes millions of dollars each year to the local economy and has been ranked as a top 50 company in the state of Arizona,” says Byron Brown, assistant warden at Florence Correctional Center, who attended the event. “I found it very exhilarating to know we have such a positive impact within the state.”It is so nice to see the these corporations can buy politicians and state governments, even interrupting the state house and senate.
